UNIVERSITY CITY was named and designed in the 1960’s to be the residential community for the newly built University of California, San Diego (UCSD). This well-located area is often referred to as the “Golden Triangle” drawn by the I-5, I-805 merge to the north and the east-west 52 freeway to the south.
The south end of University City is bordered on the south by 52 Freeway and San Clemente Canyon , the west by La Jolla , the east by Miramar Corps Air Station(MCAS) and the north by Sorrento Valley. With about 4800 single family homes, it also supports an expanding retirement condominium community , two small but comprehensive shopping centers, a 9-hole University City Golf Course, Curie and Spreckels Elementary schools, Standley Middle School and Standley Recreation Center and Park which includes a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, children’s play area and welcoming grounds for summer picnics and musical afternoons. This community has lots of multigenerational appeal.
The north end of University City developed in the 1980-90’s is primarily comprised of a mix of condominiums and apartment complexes which include master-planned La Jolla Colony. In addition to its residential component, the north is host to the regional shopping center, University Towne Center, Doyle Elementary School, several biotech, computer and financial firms and two major hospitals, Scripps Memorial and UCSD’S Thornton Hospital.
Educationally, University City is managed by San Diego Unified School District which includes three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Because of its close ties with UCSD, there are many opportunities for those wishing to make education a lifelong commitment.
