CARMEL VALLEY is one of the newer planned master communities in the North-Western corner of San Diego. It was named after the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy who had run a dairy farm in the area around 1900. Although is was names North City West at its inception in 1974, by 1990 it was renamed Carmel Valley.
Carmel Valley is nestled between I-5 and Torrey Pines State Preserve on the West, Pacific Highlands on the East and North and Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve on the South. Because of its central location, several national corporations such as Oracle, US Bank, Scripps Health and Neurocrine Biosciences headquarters have located there.
According to the Tax Assessors office, there are approximately 49,000 people in the area with the median age of 36.6. 30% of the population is under 18 years of age. Three districts handle the educational needs in the Valley: Solana Beach School District manages K-6 in the northern section; Del Mar Union School District manages K-6 in the southern section; and San Dieguito Union High School district manages the two middle and two high schools. In addition there are a number of private schools in the community.
